“Work such as that of Sally Duncan needs little in the way of words. For all its simplicity and freshness, it is art in the ancient – renewed, transformed – tradition; and the memories of that lineage resonate and speak, subtly and yet, distinctly, throughout the whole body of her work. It is a significant achievement, and on that may turn out to be part of a much wider and far-reaching cultural renaissance”.

Only now one is able to grasp the incredible influences from each of these apparently unrelated trainings or occupations which come towards an artistic development. With Sally Duncan these circumstances are in any case comprehensible: philosophy as motor of spiritual significance, speech and drama in gesture and dynamic speech of movement, the meeting with old cultures in emotional, sensitive aspects or especially with regard to the journeys to India and East Asia, in open, meditative stance. That which Sally Duncan won with this is a refining, an elegance of style, in the way one could find it a hundred years ago with Brancussi, Matisse or with Modigliani. And still this is no repeating of old known forms, but rather an artistic language from which she creates from within again and again anew.
